Sidewalks or garden walls can often create dams that hold water in areas near the foundation. It’s common to have a downspout dumping into an area between a walkway and a home. The water can’t flow out because it is trapped by the walkway so it has to flow under the walkway in order to flow away from the house.
The video below shows an example of how water from a downspout is trapped in a planting bed so it works its way under the concrete driveway, causing the driveway to settle and crack and also undermining the nearby retaining wall as well as killing healthy grass beds.
